Clan Wars

In many ways, the Clan Wars era runs parallel to the canon timeline. However, there are some areas that deviate rather significantly. Particularly, the end and the Day of the Elements.

A simple time line of events follows:

  • Bayushi Shoju is given a prophecy that leads him to believe that the Hantei line will be the destroyers of Rokugan. He begins plans to prevent this prophecy.
  • Shoju meets with the Dragon Clan and interprets their cryptic replies as a validation of his plans.
  • Unusual disappearances of Scorpion Clan emissaries start happening all over Rokugan. Emissaries into Scorpion lands suddenly stop sending regular reports.
  • Leaving Dragon lands, Shoju heads for Otosan Uchi, presumably on his way home.
  • Arriving at Otosan Uchi, Shoju’s entourage consists of his immediate family and personal family guard only.
  • Reporting to the Emperor, Shoju uses a Bloodsword to kill him after cryptically reporting a threat to the empire.
  • At the same time as Hantei XXXVIII’s murder, an assassination attempt against Hantei Sotorii (the Emperor’s only heir) is thwarted. His death is faked and he is smuggled out of Otosan Uchi.
  • Akodo Toturi finds Bayushi Shoju waiting patiently for him in the Imperial throne room. Shoju declares that he has saved Rokugan from destruction and dies fighting him.
  • Shoju’s family and guard are taken into custody before they are able to flee the city.
  • Thinking that the Imperial line is dead, Toturi assumes the throne in an administrative capacity to prevent chaos.
  • Hantei Sotorii returns to Otosan Uchi and finds Toturi upon his father’s throne with representatives of every clan squabbling over what to do with Bayushi Kachiko and her son.
  • Enraged at Totori’s hubris, Sotorii banishes him from Otosan Uchi, to never return.
  • Toturi returns to Lion lands with many of his clan in tow.
  • Sotorii takes Kachiko for his wife and her son vanishes. She believes he has been executed.
  • The Crab Clan arrive at Otosan Uchi with a large force, not having heard that Sotorii’s death was false.
  • Hida Kisada all but openly denounces Sotorii and the Crab Clan army marches out of Otosan Uchi. Kisada fumes all the way back that a weakling is about to take the throne.
  • Sotorii takes the throne and is declared Hantei XXXIX
  • Yogo Junzo, dismaying about the death of his Daimyo, opens the first of the Black Scrolls. Shugenja across the Empire are struck dumb as the elements recoil.
  • Toturi discovers that the first scroll has been opened and returns to Otosan Uchi, defying his banishment. The Emperor, enraged by Toturi’s diobedience, casts him and the rest of the Akodo family out of the Lion Clan. He orders them to track down and stop this “threat to Rokugan”
  • The new Emperor rescinds the Imperial ban on opium smoking. Slowly, he withdraws from his responsibilities and few are able to gain an audience.
  • A plot to cripple the newly legal opium market is traced back to Kachiko. The Emperor decrees that she is banned from leaving the castle and places her under constant guard.
  • Hida Kisada strikes a bargain with the minions of the Shadowlands, deciding to take the Imperial throne by force. He marches a large army towards Otosan Uchi.
  • At Beiden Pass, a force of Dragon, Unicorn, and ronin block the Crab Army. The ronin Toturi leads them and defeats the tainted army with the help of a surprise force of Naga.
  • Lion Clan samurai march into Crane lands, taking advantage of the Crane’s lack of Imperial backing.
  • An affront to the very balance of the world, the Dark Oracles formed Elemental Terrors in an attempt to control the very substance of the universe. Elemental dragons, the uncorrupted Oracles, and a pair of devout craftsman formed five nemurani, one for each of the elements, to fight back.
  • A plague sweeps across Rokugan and Toturi’s army heads south into Crane lands at the behest of Doji Hoturi.
  • Disease and fighting plague Rokugan through the worst winter in history. It takes countless lives. Undead begin to appear from decimated villages and cause even more destruction.
  • Spring brings reports of a major change in Otosan Uchi. The city is in disarray and nothing comes in or out of the Imperial Palace.
  • Having secretly amassed an immense flotilla, Hida Kisada lands a large army to the plains below Otosan Uchi. Word reaches Toturi, barely in time and he is able to warn the other Clans.
  • Forces from all Clans converge on the capital city to stop them. They discover that Otosan Uchi had fallen to corruption and Toturi meets with the Generals.
  • With the Crab marching up from the beaches and Shadowlands minions sitting atop the city walls, Toturi prepares his men for a two-front war.
  • An army of Shadowlands creatures arrives on the battlefield. Led by Yogo Junzo, his army outnumbers all the others on the battlefield combined.
  • A gleam of green light flashes from the head of the Crab Army. At their lead is Hida Yakamo. Once Tainted and bearing the clawed hand of an Oni, he now wields an enormous tetsubo in a brilliant hand of jade. The Crab are no longer pawns of Fu Leng.
  • Revealing himself to be the descendant of Shinsei, a hooded ronin and six samurai appear before the generals.
  • The ronin introduces five as the bearers of the elemental nemurani and calls them the Avatars of the Elements. The sixth, he merely introduces as Agasha Isha.
  • Pointing to six of the leaders, the hooded ronin declares them Thunders. To the surprise of everyone, Hida Yakamo is one of them.
  • The armies of Rokugan face Junzo’s army. Fighting is fierce and Junzo’s forces dominate until a coalition of Minor Clans arrives on their flank.
  • The battle swings both ways until arrows from a surprise attack of Naga cut into the rear of Junzo’s army. Wave upon wave of the snake men shatter the Tainted Army.
  • The armies of Rokugan turn to lay siege on the capital. The descendant of Shinsei leads the Thunders and Avatars to a secret entrance.
  • Bayushi Kachiko is waiting when they arrive. Having watched the city fall to corruption, she plotted for this day and is able to sneak them through the city to the Imperial Palace.
  • Confronting the Emperor, the liberators find that the Emperor has been possessed by the spirit of Fu Leng himself.
  • Appearing from nowhere, Togashi Yokuni admits to be Kami Togashi. He holds out the 12th Black Scroll to his brother. Fu Leng crushes it in his hands, freeing the last of his dark soul.
  • The Thunders attack the Dark Lord but are outmached by his incredible power. The Avatars join the fight but they too are no match for him.
  • Having quietly watched the fight from the sidelines, Agasha Isha steps forward and holds out the Scroll of the Elements she has borne in secret. She begins to recite the single spell inscribed on it.
  • Pure elemental energies erupt from each of the Avatars and pin the Emperor to the ground.
  • Though strong, Fu Leng is slowly able to rise to his feet, resisting the spell. Having suffered from corruption, the elements themselves have weakened too much to defeat him.
  • “You know what must be done,” Togashi whispers in Isha’s ear. Raising her head to the heavens, she calls down a prayer for the blessing of Ameterasu.
  • A pillar of blinding light erupts from her form. It mixes with the elemental energies and the Emperor is completely engulfed in it.
  • The light fades and the Emperor is found at the foot of the Jade Throne. He is cleansed of all taint and the spirit of Fu Leng is gone, destroyed or banished to Jigoku; none are sure which
  • Where Agasha Isha stood, only a rolled up scroll and large charred patch remains. It is clear she gave her life to save Rokugan and its Emperor from the Shadowlands
  • The Scorpion Clan is reinstated, and the Emperor declares that Bayushi Kachiko not his wife and she is free to tend to her Clan as Daimyo. This starts an uproar but the Emperor’s word is law.
  • It is now five years later. The Clans continue to rebuild.
  • The Lion and Crane have remained cordial if a bit strained, and the Crab sits quietly at their wall.
  • After a year of mentoring the young Emperor, the descendent of Shinsei vanishes.
  • Rokugan seems on its way toward another Thousand Years of Peace. Still, minions of the Shadowlands infest much of the empire, including parts of Otosan Uchi. Old wounds have not completely healed, and many trusts have been lost…
